Fountain Square starts Thanksgiving early with yet another wacky event! We bowl frozen turkeys on the Fountain Square ice rink, because it’s silly and fun and supports a good cause.
The person who knocks down the most bowling pins in three throws will win $50 cash, a DVD of the classic “Turkeys Away” episode of WKRP in Cincinnati, and a trophy. This year, about 60 people participated, and Jeremy Hennessy of Newport won with a score of 20 out of 30.
We had two lanes for adults and a free lane for the kids with a smaller turkey.
To play, participants must bring two non-perishable food items* or $5 cash to the Fountain Square ice rink. Food and cash donations are given to Jimmy Heath House, a 25-unit permanent supportive housing project that assists chronically homeless individuals and is managed by Over-the-Rhine Community Housing. In 2011, participants donated $130 and 12 bags of food.
*Suggested food items: canned meat products (tuna, chicken, ham, spaghetti with meatballs, chili with meat and beans, beef stew, beans and hot dogs, etc.), peanut butter, canned vegetables and fruits, canned soups, and boxed macaroni and cheese. No glass, please.
Special thanks to media sponsors Rewind 94.9 and Yelp.com! Thanks to Pieczonka Unlimited for providing the trophy.
