Cincinnati’s Urban Iditarod
The Cinciditarod is a wacky shopping cart race through the city. It’s named in tribute to the Alaskan Iditarod – a brutal 1,100-mile dog-sledding race – but instead of dogs, it’s people; instead of sleds, it’s shopping carts; and instead of Alaska, it’s Cincinnati.
The race starts on Fountain Square on the first Saturday in March – the same day as the real Iditarod. And yes, we stole the idea from similar races in San Francisco, Portland, New York, and Chicago.
While physically attached to their grocery carts, teams push through a nearly five-mile course over the streets of downtown and neighboring areas, picking up items on a grocery list and stopping at five mandatory checkpoints.
Participants, spectators, friends, and fans can enjoy a party on the Square as teams finish and during the awards ceremony. Teams are challenged to show energy, creativity, and comedy in their carts, costumes, performances, and commitment to the spirit of the Cinciditarod.
